How to Stop Excessive Whining In a Dog or Puppy

A very difficult circumstance dog  owners face is a whining puppy or dog. The best time to stop this is when the dog is still young. Regardless of the age of the animal, you need to understand the reason for the whining in the first place.

Whining is a sort of dog communication. They usually whine when they are scared, in pain, or unhappy. Most of the time, it is a behavioral response that occurs when they are upset or feeling abandoned by their pack. If you have a dog that suddenly starts to whine, that never did so in the past, then the dog could be hurt or sick. If this is the case, then your dog needs to see the vet.

Usually, the reason for a dog whining is because they are scared of being left alone, and the whine is meant as an alarm so that they can be rescued. Punishing your dog for whining will probably only make it worse, so to stop dog whining, the answer is training.

If you have a dog that whines when you are not in the room, then you have to teach your dog that they have to get used to periods of separation. This can be done by leaving your dog alone for small time periods and then gradually increasing the amount of time that you are gone. Usually, after a time of playing with your dog, they will whine, and this can be extremely difficult for dog owners. When you hear your dog whine, you want to go to them, but you have to teach your dog that you are the boss, and you will return when you want to, and not when they want you to. You have to teach your dog to become comfortable with their surroundings. If your dog whines for a few minutes, you can back in a play with your dog, and then leave again. The whining should get less, but if not, when you leave and the dog whines, tell them NO! If the dog remains quiet for a while, tell them that they are good, and give them lots of praise.

Sometimes dogs whine when they want attention. Usually in order to stop whining at times like this, you will have to spend time playing with your dog. You will also have to either ignore the whining, or if that doesn’t do it, you can say BE quiet! In a loud voice, and try spraying your dog’s face with water. Soon, you will not have to use the loud voice or water, as they will know what the command means.

By being aware of the reason for your dog’s whining, you can discover solutions to ending it. Although it may take time and patience, you can stop your dog from constant whining, and make them understand that you are in control, and not them. When you can do this effectively, your relationship with your pet will be much happier and less stressful. Be sure to take time to play with your dog everyday, that way they know that you love them, and will not whine out of boredom.
