How to Stop an Airedale Terrier Jumping Up

Your dog might jump up on others or the furniture for several different reasons. Many times, dogs first jump up on people to get their attention, and let everyone know they are there. Since dogs know who another dog is through the scent glands that are found in their face, they attempt to do this with people as well.

To show your dog that jumping is not acceptable, they must know that you are in control, and they are not. If your dog has ever jumped up and gotten attention or food, they will continue to do so, because this is positive reinforcement. To halt your dog’s jumping, they have to learn two fairly simple commands. Sit and off. This can be done by first teaching the dog that when he jumps up on someone or the furniture, it is not acceptable, and this is done through the OFF command. Be sure to have your mouth open when you tell them, with teeth that can be seen. You have to make eye contact with the dog, so that you are sure they understand. This must be done repeatedly until the dog does it without being told more than once. Give them lots of love and praise when they listen.

In order for this command to work correctly, everyone in the family, and any visitors that come over must know it as well, and use it each time the dog jumps up. If everyone does their part, your dog will learn the command in no time, and they will no longer jump up on people or furniture.

Sit is another great command, and it can be implemented if you see that your dog is about to jump. When you see the tell tale signs, tell them to Sit in a firm voice. If your dog still jumps after you have issued the off command, you must ignore your dog until he stops the behavior. To show them who is boss, they should be isolated for a while, to learn that this is not acceptable behavior. Never hit or yell at your dog, as this will do nothing more than increase aggression and confusion.

prevention is the easiest way in which to stop the jumping. Some ways in which to do this are:

1. Since you know that dogs like to greet you by sniffing your face, lower yourself down to where they are. This will eliminate the need for your dog to jump up to reach your face.
2. Teaching your dog the off or down command is also an excellent way to prevent jumping. Showing your dog your hands at the level of your knees, and not giving them attention until stay down, is a great way to teach your dog that they get love when they obey, and not when they jump.

The ultimate way to stop your Airedale Terrier from jumping on others, is to always remain consistent with what you want from your dog, and the commands they have to follow. This will help the dog learn what is good behavior and what is not, and soon they will go out of their way to get praise for being good, and not jumping.
