How To Stop A Basset Hound Whining
There is no doubt that whining can get annoying after a while, whether it is coming from a child or from a dog. Your Basset Hound may be whining for several reasons. Maybe you are eating something that he wants or maybe you are outside or inside where he is not. Sometimes the whining can be a sign of something going physically wrong with the dog.
The whining would be a sign of discomfort or pain. Then there are those dogs who will sit by the door and whine in order to let you know that it is time for a potty break. Out of all of the reasons for whining, a medical problem and potty breaks are the only acceptable reasons for whining. Of course, with the potty breaks, it would be nice if the dog could put that behavior to the side and learn to silently let you know that it is time to go outside.
If your Basset Hound is whining to simply get your attention then the best way to correct the situation is to ignore him completely. Do not give the “no” command, do not look at the dog and do not give in just so that you do not have to hear the whining anymore. The best thing you can do is to completely ignore the dog so that once the whining is done, you can then give him attention. After a while, your Basset Hound will start to associate the quiet behavior with getting your attention. Eventually, you will hardly ever hear the whining.
Make sure that you are always rewarding your dog with positive reinforcement. You will also want to make sure that you are giving your dog extra attention whenever he is quiet. This will help in reinforcing the quiet behavior instead of reinforcing the whining behavior.
If it seems as though your dog whines for no reason or only starts to whine mean he moves, there may be a major medical problem that you need to address. Make sure that you are taking him to the vet right away in order to be checked out. It could be something simple but you won’t know until you go to the vet. If the vet says that everything is fine but your dog is still acting as though he is in pain, you may want to get a second opinion. You would get a second opinion when it comes to the health of yourself and your family so you should also want a second opinion when it comes to the health of your dog.
All in all, the training should be easy enough and in no time at all you should be able to be free from the sounds of whining. If at any time your dog resorts back to the whining to get your attention then you will want to start again with all of the training. The second time around should prove to be easy enough as your dog should quickly catch on to the rules. If you keep up with consistent behavior modification techniques then you should not have to worry so much about relapses in the whining behavior.
