How To Stop A Boston Terrier Whining
The Boston Terrier is known to be a little bit of a baby when it comes to wanting its way. When whining is involved, many people tend to get tired of it pretty quick. Once you notice that your dog likes to whine, it is important to address the issue. The longer you allow the whining to continue, the harder it will be to get him to stop. You want to make sure that you are correcting it before your dog starts to assume that whining is an acceptable behavior.
The first thing you want to do is to determine whether or not your dog is in any pain. If your Boston Terrier seems to only whine when he gets up, walks around, sits down or goes to the bathroom, then there is a pattern which would look as though there is something medically wrong. Of course, only your vet will be able to determine whether or not there is anything truly wrong with your Boston Terrier. If the vet says there is nothing wrong but you still are not sure about that, feel free to get a second opinion. This is the health of the dog you brought into your family that is at stake.
Once you are fully satisfied that there is nothing medically wrong with your Boston Terrier you will want to make sure that you are figuring out just what makes him whine. Does he mostly whine when there is human food out? Does your Terrier whine when he cannot be right near you? Does he whine over just about anything and everything? These are questions you are going to need to ask yourself. You want to make sure that you are figuring out the pattern of the whining in order to make sure that it is being addressed properly.
If the whining is a learned behavior because that is how the Terrier is able to grab your attention – the fault is your own. If your dog starts to whine, no matter how irritating it may be, you have to ignore it. Just like you would ignore a child who is nagging you, you will want to ignore the dog that is whining. Once the bad behavior stops and all is quiet, then you can give the dog the attention he wanted. Over time, your little Boston Terrier will start to associate the quiet behavior with getting attention from the humans. He will learn that when he whines, no one will even look at him.
You have to be persistent with your training. If you let up any you may find that your dog will fall back into his old habits. Keep up with the training and eventually you will find that your dog no longer whines at all. Everything will be peaceful and you will no longer be the neighbor with the annoying whining dog that no one likes. The sooner you get started, the better.
