How to Stop a Boxer Dog Whining Excessively
Now that you have finally brought your new boxer dog home, there are probably a lot of things that you have on your mind. You might have thought that you prepared for everything but if your boxer dog started whining out of no where, there is a good chance that you were not prepared for that. Most people would assume that the boxer is not a dog that would be prone to episodes of whining. Of course, all dogs have the ability to whine in order to communicate but some dogs are more prone to it than others.
The key to successfully putting an end to a boxer dog whining is to figure out just what is causing the whining in the first place. Is there something that is wrong with your dog medically? Is your dog simply trying to get at some of the tasty human food that looks so much better than the dog food? Maybe your boxer is simply trying to get all of your attention on him. All of these reasons could be the reasons behind why your boxer dog is whining. Since a possible medical problem would be of the highest concern, it is important to make sure that you are ruling that one out right away.
Start by taking your boxer to the vet. Explain the whining that he is doing and when it seems he is doing it the most. This could help explain a pattern that could be the direct result of an internal or external injury. Hopefully, your vet will be able to say with confidence that there is nothing medically wrong with your boxer. If this happens, then you know that you are simply dealing with a behavioral issue here. Even though it is much better than the alternative, there are still some issues that will need to be addressed.
If your boxer is simply whining to grab your attention, you will want to handle the situation in the same manner as you would handle a child who is whining to get your attention. Simply ignore them until they stop. Even if you are stopping what you are doing to correct the dog, it is still a form of attention from you and if getting attention from you was the goal of the dog, then you just taught him that whining works. Once a dog figures out what works to get him what he wants, he will continue to do it. Ignore the whining and then once he quiets down, you can reward the silence by giving him the attention you know that he wants and needs.
This training may take a little bit of time but the time spent will be well worth it. If you allow the whining to continue on, you will find that it will only get worse. The whining will get louder and the dog will whine for longer periods of time until you finally break and give in to what he wants. The sooner you stop this bad habit, the easier everyone in the house will be able to rest.
