How To Stop A Dalmatian Digging
Having a Dalmatian that enjoys digging can be a real problem. It is important that you curb your dogs digging habit as soon as possible. Those holes in the yard are not only unsightly but can be a real danger to those visiting your home as well as your own family.
You need to understand that while some dogs just enjoy digging, most dogs dig as a substitute for something that is missing in their life. Knowing what your dog needs and meeting those needs is the surest way to eliminate this problem once and for all. Here are some of the most common needs that results in a dog digging.
Exercise
One of the main reasons dogs dig is because they need exercise. If your dog is confined to a relatively small area and has no means of getting enough exercise he will be forced to dig as a means to get the exercise his body needs. Dalmatians are very active dogs and they need to be exercised frequently.
Before placing your dog in a small confined area does not allow for the necessary exercise Take the time to play with him and exercise him just before you confine him. This may be all that is needed to prevent him from making those holes. Throwing a ball for him to chase, jogging with him, and other activities will give him the exercise he needs and hopefully tire him out enough that he will just want to spend the time in the yard relaxing.
Entertainment
Your Dalmatian may also be digging because he is bored. A dog with little or nothing to do will find his own entertainment. Digging may be just the thing to keep him occupied. Providing your dog with a variety of toys that hold his interest may be the ideal solution to your problem. Providing chew bones, balls, soft toys and toys that make noise when he steps on them on bites them will give it a lot of variety. Hanging a large ball from a string in the middle of your dog kennel can provide your dog with hours of entertainment. There are also a number of puppy and dog puzzles available that will occupy your dalmatian for hours on end.
Shade and Security
Your Dalmatian may be digging to get out of the heat or because he is feeling anxious. Making sure he has a cool safe place to retreat too will make him much less anxious to dig.
Supervision
If all else fails only allow your dog outside when you are free to surprise him. When he starts to dig tell him “No” in a sharp voice and then give him one of his toys to distract him. Eventually, he will learn that playing with his toys is what he should be doing.
There are many other things you can do to prevent your dalmatian from digging, but these tips will should do the trick if used consistently until your dog understands what is expected of him.
