How To Stop A Dalmatian Whining
Unfortunately, you cannot wine and dine your whining Dalmatian, unlike a beautiful woman. After all, whining is a natural form of communication for dogs, just as crying is for humans. Often, the best thing to do is to address the problem the best possible way – by looking at the whines from the point of view of your Dalmatian.
This does not mean to say that you should wear your Halloween Dalmatian costume, get down on all four and act like a whining dog. Aside from making you look embarrassingly ridiculous, it is actually counterintuitive because then you will lose your alpha dog status in the eyes of your Dalmatian.
Instead, here are the ways with which to stop your Dalmatian from whining the heck out of your ears, said ways of which will depend on the causes behind the behavior. Just remember that the underlying principle in all of these dog training suggestions is neither to punish nor reward bad behavior like whining.
Physical Illnesses
If your pet dog is not a natural whiner, his sudden whining behavior may be an expression of the physical pain felt by a physical illness. It may be a skin disease causing the pain although internal injuries should not be immediately ruled out. In this case, your main concern is not to ensure that your Dalmatian becomes a well-trained dog. Instead, you should have the veterinarian check out your pet dog for illnesses and diseases. In this way, appropriate treatment will be provided and, hopefully, your Dalmatian will stop whining till the early hours of the morning.
Feelings of Abandonment
Your pet Dalmatian may also be whining excessively because he is feeling lonely, sad and abandoned. This is especially true when you lead a very busy lifestyle with little time to spend with your pet dog. Now, if you cannot give up your Dalmatian to another owner who may be able to give him all the attention that he needs, you can adopt the following methods:
* Crate Training – Your Dalmatian must have a clean and comfortable crate where you can leave him while you are out and about with your human life. It must have a comfortable bed as well as a sufficient number of appropriate toys and adequate quantity of food. If your dog is feeling good, then he should not whine too much about his lot in life.
It may be difficult to train your Dalmatian to accept crate training. But if you can start with short periods of time inside the crate and then gradually building up the time, then it is very possible.
* Extra Attention – Your pet dog may also be just looking for your attention. In this case, the best action is to provide extra time for playing with him or just spending quiet times in front of the fireplace.
However, you should not give immediate attention whenever your dog is whining. Only give him attention as well as a reward when he becomes quiet since your actions can be interpreted as rewards for what is essentially bad behavior. Indeed, Dalmatians are lovable pets but when they start whining, you should give tough love in the sense that it is necessary to start training to stop the whining.
