When puppies are teething, they seem to want to bite on everything, even human body parts. Luckily, this behavior can usually be stopped rather easily. The faster you are able to teach your dog bite inhibition, the better it will be for everyone concerned.

Two things that go together are puppy socialization and bite inhibition. If your puppy is biting, never slap the puppy, or give them any kind of physical punishment. The puppy will either believe you are playing, or become fearful of humans, or this will cause worse behavioral problems in the future.

Make sure that your puppy is praised for good behavior, and discouraged from behavior that is not acceptable. If they are denied your affection when they bite, they will learn that this type of behavior is not acceptable. Be sure that you are always consistent with the type of discipline your puppy receives. Everyone in the house needs to do the same thing as you when the puppy bites or nips. This must take place every time your puppy bites or nips. You must be sure that your puppy knows that biting isn’t acceptable, as they must be taught this, they will not just know that they are doing something undesirable.

Another reason a puppy may bite is if they are trying to assert dominance over you. This cannot happen, a dog must know at all times you are dominant, and not they. This type of behavior must be stopped at once, to avoid further problems later in life.

Some ways to stop your puppy from biting are:

  • For puppies, often simply redirecting the bite from human flesh to a chew toy or bone will do the trick. When your puppy starts to bit you, holler NO!, and give your puppy a chew toy or ice cube.
  • Another way to stop nipping is to make your puppy believe you are really being hurt when they bite. This is much the way puppies learn from each other when they are biting too hard. The biting only ceases when the other puppy yelps. If you startle your puppy with your voice, and then stop playing with them for a while, they will learn that the playing stops when they start to bite.
  • If your puppy is very bad at biting, when he latches on to your hand, yell No!, and then place your thumb in his mouth under his tongue, and your other finger under his chin and hold it there for a few seconds. He will find this uncomfortable, and will no longer be able to bite you.

Biting and nipping is something almost every dog owner goes through. When you have the right tips and techniques to stop this problem, your relationship with your pet can become what it is meant to be- A loving and bite free friendship.
