How To Stop A Dogue de Bordeaux Dog Jumping Up
Training your Dogue de Bordeaux can be a challenging experience. This is not a dog for first time dog owners or inexperienced dog owners. Descending from Roman mastiff type breeds it is a very strong and powerful dog. Originally bred to guard and attack it can easily return to those behaviors. Todays’ Dogue de Bordeaux is the result of careful breeding in an effort to develop the character traits that would be more acceptable today. The temperament is a lot milder than its ancestors. Today their size and appearance alone can deter a threat to their space.
The breed can be very sociable if well trained at a young age. Their first way of greeting is to jump up on people. This needs to be stopped immediately. These dogs will grow to an excess weight of 125 pounds and therefore can be a danger to smaller people, children or older adults.
Consistent and persistent training are the order of the day. You can set up a scenario by having someone come to your door and watch the dog’s reaction. If excitement is too obvious, you must hold the dog by the collar and get him to calm down before you open the door. The dog should take a sitting position and hold it until it is told that it is free. You can repeat the scenario until you no longer have to hold the dog in the sitting position when the doorbell rings or someone knocks on your door.
These dogs are guard dogs, consequently very territorial. They have the tendency to be very reserved with strangers. It is therefore important to have them well socialized as puppies and continue this through adulthood. During these times of socialization it is up to the owner to train the dog to behave appropriately. They must learn to obey verbal commands every time they are given. With proper training the dog can be a very faithful and devoted companion. Without adequate training the dog can be a hazard to anyone who comes close.
When playing with your dog, do not encourage jumping up on you as part of playtime. This should never be done. If not properly trained they can also be aggressive towards other dogs. If playtime as a puppy includes other dogs, you dog may be well socialized and accepting of other dogs as it matures.
Establish your control as leader of the pack at an early age. With proper obedience your dog can be taught not to jump on people as a form of his “hello”. By being a bit stubborn, it makes it important to continue training regularly and not to slack off “just one time”. A physical encounter with this dog can prove to be very damaging to whomever the challenge may be with. All bad behavior in a dog can be controlled with training.
You can surpass the dog’s stubborn behavior with proper attention to positive behavior. The Dogue de Bordeaux is a very intelligent dog and when a lesson is properly taught, it is well remembered.
