How to Stop a Mastiff Dog or Puppy Barking

Some people can’t understand why you might want your dog to stop barking but then again, if they had a Mastiff that was barking all day and all night, they might just get it. If your Mastiff only barks on occasion, that is fine. Barking is how they communicate and you would want your Mastiff letting you know if there was an intruder or someone at the front door. However, if your Mastiff is barking at everything that moves, you could have a problem on your hands, especially if you have neighbors who are not fond of all of the barking.

Now, before you can proceed with any training on barking, you will need to evaluate just when it is that your Mastiff is barking. If you have only learned about the problem with barking because your neighbors are letting you know about it, it is probably because your pet is only barking when you leave the house. This is a sign of anxiety and it is something that you will be able to address.

If your Mastiff just likes barking at every person and animal that walks by, then you might have a problem of having a dog that has not been properly socialized. Luckily for you, your dog and everyone he barks at, this is a problem that can easily be corrected. It is once you determine just what the cause of all of the barking is that you will be able to find a solution. Only then will you be able to take control and calm your Mastiff down.

Then again, there are some dogs who seem to simply like to hear their own voices and when you respond to their barking, they have learned that it is a behavior that works out in their best interest. When your dog barks to get your attention, you will want to ignore him. Do not go over to pet him or to give him any attention. You can give the “quiet” or “no bark” command but then walk away. When your Mastiff calms down, you can praise him and give him the attention that he was wanting all along.

For a lack of socialization, you will want to make sure that you are taking your Mastiff out more often. Go for a few walks around the block, check out the local park with your dog or visit a local pet store that allows dogs inside. Allowing your Mastiff to socialize with not only other people but other dogs as well should help curb how much he barks at everyone.

If excessive barking only seems to happen when you leave the house, you will want to change things around a little. Try leaving a television or radio on. The sounds of people talking should help ease any fears your Mastiff has of being left alone. You will also want to make sure that you are not making a big production out of you leaving the house. You are only making things worse.

The key is to stick with your training and be consistent. Before you know it, you will have the barking problem completely under control.
