How to Stop a Pekingese Dog or Puppy Barking
While it’s natural for your Pekingese dog to bark, it becomes unnatural when the frequency or timing is unnatural. It’s crucial to remember that barking is a dog’s way of communicating with humans or other dogs. So by understanding why your Pekingese is barking, you’ll be better equipped to determine what actions to take.
Here are some tips to reduce unwanted barking from your dog:
1. Use water and a calm command.
Yelling doesn’t work, and in fact could encourage your dog’s barking. That’s because your dog will conclude that barking gets your attention. Instead, toss a little water onto your dog’s face whenever it starts barking incessantly. Afterwards, say “Quiet” at a normal tone, one or two times. This will cause your dog to link the word ‘quiet’ with the water. And since dogs typically dislike having water splashed on their faces, it will likely pipe down.
2. Teach your dog that barking for attention is ineffective.
If you oblige your Pekingese dog every time it starts barking, then it won’t stop until you do whatever it wants you to do. At that point, who’s the master? Keep in mind that you want to change your dog’s behavior, rather than reward it. Letting your dog indoors every time it starts barking incessantly will be counterproductive.
3. Consult your veterinarian if growling is involved.
Barking is one thing. Growling and baring teeth is a completely different thing. If your dog repeatedly exhibits the latter behavior, then immediately contact your Pekingese’s veterinarian. There may be some biological (or psychological) problems. A trained professional would be better prepared to deal with such situations.
4. Buy feeding toys for your dog.
These toys keep your dog busy while you’re away, which will help to prevent excessive barking. Examples of these toys are tubes into which you can place food; and balls that require the dog to turn the ball in order to access food. Your dog will be too busy to bark!
5. Don’t pamper your dog when you leave and return.
The reason is that this action reinforces the idea that the dog’s being alone is a really challenging experience for it. While there’s nothing wrong with pampering your dog before you leave and after you return-don’t overdo it! Doing so will encourage your dog to wait patiently until you enter the house’s front door again.
6. Keep your dog happy and hidden while you’re away.
If you’re going to be outside your home for a while, then take certain steps to prevent unwanted barking from your Pekingese. Make sure that it has enough food and fresh water. Also, keep other dogs and humans out-of-sight. The out-of-sight, out-of-mind principal is at play here. One of the most effective methods is to keep your dog indoors. Besides doing that, take steps to ensure that your dog has no view of outdoors.
While there’s nothing wrong with your Pekingese dog barking, these tips will help to moderate it. There are appropriate reasons for your dog to bark, and giving the neighborhood a wake-up call isn’t one of them!
