How To Stop a Poodle Jumping Up on People or Furniture
Poodles are adorable dogs and they seem to be able to make themselves so comfortable on the furniture in your home. Since many of the poodle breeds out there are relatively small, it may seem as though allowing them on the furniture or to jump up on people would not be much of a problem. The thing is though, jumping up may have been cute when the Poodle was a puppy but as the puppy grows, it becomes a behavior that is no longer so cute.
As far as the furniture goes, Poodles really do not shed so you will not have that problem, but there will be other problems for you to deal with. The sheer fact that your little Poodle will be under the impression that he is alpha dog in the house is reason enough to keep him off of the furniture. You have to be the leader of the pack, otherwise, your dog is going to try to rule the house.
And of course, a small Poodle jumping up on someone is not going to cause nearly as much damage as a boxer would, but it can still be very annoying. There have been many cases where friends and family stop visiting people simply because they are tired of having a dog jumping all over them. If you are able to correct this issue with your dog, you will not risk being excluded out of gatherings.
When you notice that your Poodle is about ready to jump up on you, it is important to make sure that you are taking action. Stop talking to the Poodle, if you were already speaking to him, turn your back to him and completely ignore him. This is not cruel or mean but it is a good way to show the dog that the behavior that he was exhibiting is unacceptable. It is only when your Poodle calms down is when you should pet him.
Since the Poodle is known to be a pretty smart breed, you should notice that he will catch on fairly quick. The problem though is that while the Poodle may know what is going on, he may have the desire to prove you wrong or to ignore you. It is just their own little personality coming out. Do not worry. If you are persistent your tiny Poodle will eventually come around and he will listen to what you are teaching him through your trainings.
If you are finding that you are having an exceptionally hard time with the training of your Poodle, there is nothing wrong with seeking out a little additional help. There are plenty of magazines and books out there that can help you with the issues that you are facing. There are also a lot of highly trained professional dog trainers that can help to make sure that your precious poodle never jumps up on someone again unless he was invited to do so.
