How to Stop a Pug Biting

Your little pug is probably the cutest thing you have seen since…well, anything. The thing is though, that little pug might very well start to lose his cuteness factor when he starts biting you and your family and possibly even the mailman. The best time to correct this behavior is as soon as it starts. There are even some things that you can do in order to snip the behavior in the rear before it even begins.

Teaching your pug that biting is wrong is not just for your safety but for the safety of your pug as well. If someone were to become injured from your dog biting him or her, you could have your dog taken away from you. Generally, dogs that are caught biting people are put to sleep. This is certainly not something that you want for your precious pup. In addition, you could be sued in court and find yourself paying out thousands of dollars in fines and medical bills. As you can see, there are many reasons to teach your pug that biting is not acceptable.

The first thing that you need to remember is that you are to never physically punish your dog. Punishing by violence for violence just is not logical and you could actually end up making your dogs violent tendencies worse. Instead, you want to use corrective behavior techniques and positive reinforcement.

It is important to make sure that you and others around your pug are not going to play tug of war games with him. These games teach aggression and since that is something you want to avoid, it is important that you avoid these games at all costs. Even though it may be cute at the time, within a matter of weeks or months, it could turn into a disaster. Do not encourage your puppy to bite and then later yell at him for doing the very thing you taught him.

When you see, witness or experience your pug biting, make sure that you are changing your tone of voice to something deep and loud and give the firm command “No”. You could clap your hands together or stomp your foot on the ground while giving the command if you want. The goal is to appear scary and unhappy, without actually laying a hand on the pug.

The training period can be a stressful time so you want to make sure that everyone in the house, including the children, are comfortable with the training rules and how to implement them. If not everyone is on the same page then the pug will never truly learn the rules about biting and he will simply be left confused.

Do not confuse the dog. Keep the rules simple and always be consistent. If you let the biting slip every now and then, your pug will never know when it is and when it is not okay to bite.

If you keep up with the training, you will see excellent results in no time at all. Even if at first it does not seem as though the training is working, it is – you just have to hang in there.
