If this is a problem that has just suddenly started, there could be in fact something medically wrong with your Rat Terrier dog or puppy. In order to rule that possibility out, you are going to want to make sure that you are making an appointment for your dog to go see the vet. This may help your vet determine just what exactly is going on with your puppy or dog.
After carefully examining your pet, if your vet says that there is something wrong, make sure that you are getting the proper treatment for your Rat Terrier. This should stop the problem with the whining because your dog will no longer be in a lot of pain. However, should your vet tell you that your dog is in perfect health and that there is nothing wrong, you will need to move to the next step.
Is your Rat Terrier only whining when you leave for the day? If so, then you may have a dog or puppy that is experience anxiety because of the separation. While you cannot stay home all day everyday, you can make the separation a little easier for your pet. The best thing that you can do for your dog is to not make such a big deal out of leaving the house. If you appear worried, scared or sad, your dog is going to pick up on that and he will start to be scared as well.
Some Rat Terrier puppies or dogs will whine even when the owners are home. Maybe you are in another room and you hear your dog whining because he can’t find you. If you call out to your dog or go chasing after him each time, he will learn that a great way to get your attention is to whine.
Basically, you would be teaching your dog that whining is how you are trained to listen. You do not want this pattern to begin. If it already has, simply ignore the whining. Only when your dog stops whining can you go over and give him attention. He will eventually catch on that whining does not give him what he wants.
