How to Stop a Saint Bernard Dog or Puppy Digging
Getting a new pet is exciting, especially when you’re getting a Saint Bernard. Keep in mind that your puppy is going to grow into a huge dog and he will have to learn about what good behavior is. One of the most common behavior issues that you will have to deal with is digging. This can get to be a real problem if you do not handle it right away. No one wants to have a yard that looks as if there are land mines hidden it so just what can you do about the digging?
There are several ways to handle the situation. Some people like to have a space that is designated for the dog to dig. This helps them satisfy their digging desire while keeping your yard in tact. There are plenty of people that do not condone giving the family dog his own sand lot for digging and in cases such as this; you will need to address the digging issue in a different manner.
In order to get him to stop this behavior, you need to catch him in the act and this can be difficult to do. Once you catch him digging you have the advantage of showing him that this behavior is not acceptable. This can be done with a loud stern NO, then redirect him to something that he is allowed to do. Most likely it will be hard to catch him in the act and reprimanding him after the fact is pointless as he will not know why you are upset with him.
If you find that you cannot catch your Saint Bernard in the act of digging then you will want to see if he has a special spot that he likes to dig in. Most dogs will have a favorite hole that they love to dig in and when you find his hole you can do things to make it not so appealing. Lining the hole with large rocks can help considerably. This makes the area difficult for your dog to dig through and it can make their paws tender so they will be less likely to dig up the dirt in this area. Adding pepper to the soil will also help ward off your Saint Bernard as they do not like the smell of it.
Dogs also love to dig holes in the summer months to help them find a cool place to lie down on. It is important for you to give your St. Bernard plenty of water and shade when he is outside. If he will be outside for a long period of time then you may want to see if he would like a kiddy pool. Some dogs love water and this gives them a great way to cool off.
If you find that your Saint Bernard is a digger then you need to take action as soon as possible. You do not want your dog to think that his behavior is just fine as he will continue to tear up your yard.
