How to Stop a Schnauzer Whining

Whining is one of the most irritating and disturbing behaviors that a dog owner can experience. In puppies, whining is used to let the mother know that the pups are hungry or scared, resulting in the mother returning to the babies. As dogs grow older, they often continue this behavior, especially if they have gotten what they wanted through whining in the past. However, when the reason for the behavior is determined, you can successfully cease the annoying behavior, and give your ears a rest.

Whining is the way a dog communicates, and can be caused by several different reasons. Sometimes, dogs whine when they are sad or lonely, when they want to eat something you have, when they have been separated from their owners, or when they need to go out to do their business. Even though you need the dog to let you know when they need to potty, there are other ways in which this can be done that is less irritating. If you can anticipate your dog’s need to potty, you can stop the behavior before he gets the chance to really begin.

To stop your dog from whining, the best way is to simply ignore them. Most dogs will only whine continuously if they get what they want when they whine. If you act as if they aren’t even there when they whine, they will stop the behavior.

When your dog is being good, and not whining anymore, make sure that you give them a nice treat or reward for not whining. This needs to be done often, so that the animal realizes that they are being treated well for being quiet.

If you put your dog in a kennel at night, try to put it somewhere away from you, that way you will not hear the whining, and wish to intervene. It can be difficult to ignore this behavior, but to stop it you must learn to ignore the noise.

Also, the kennel should be full of good things for the dog, so that they can associate it with positive experiences, and not prison. Have them plenty of toys and things to chew on, thus reducing their boredom. It is also a great idea to slowly increase how long the dog is on the kennel, and not place them there for long time periods.

If you have noticed that your dog only seems to whine during certain situations, then try to figure out what those situations are, and attempt to remove the causes, if possible.

If your dog whines when they use the bathroom or when they are eating, then they may have a problem that needs help by a vet. The animal might be in pain, and medical treatment might be warranted.

Dog whining is something that occurs at some point in a dog’s life, but when it occurs frequently, it can become a real pain. Getting to know why your dog whines, and getting rid of the causes, can result in a household that is whine free.
