How to Stop a Shar Pei Barking

This is a very common occurrence that arises when someone gets a new dog. It is very important to consider the dogs’ behavior and why they are behaving in such a manner prior to trying to correct the unwanted behavior. The first step to stopping the dog from barking is to identify the underlying cause for the problem as this means that the best possible preventative measures can be implemented. There are many different things that can cause a shar pei dog or puppy to show this type of behavior and these include boredom, natural behavior and poor socialization.

Boredom is one cause that can lead to a dog barking excessively. Some dogs will show this type of behavior because they feel that they are being neglected. Other reasons that can cause a dog to bark excessively through boredom are simply not taking the dog out for enough exercise and generally not spending enough time with the dog. If you have your dog in a kennel outside then it is hardly surprising that the dog is going to do a lot of barking when people walk past. This is just natural behavior. People walking past are acting as a source of stimulation for the dog and this will result in the dog barking in order to attract attention. In order to prevent the dog from barking through boredom ensure that the dog is getting enough attention and enough exercise. If you really need to put the dog in an outside kennel put it away from where people are going to be walking past as this will help to take away the stimulation. A dog suffering from boredom can often establish other unwanted behavior such as aggression as it has no method of getting rid of the excessive amount of energy that the dog has. If boredom is the main reason for the excessive barking then it is important to give the dog plenty of attention and stimulation.

It is important to remember that barking is actually a totally normal way for a dog to behave. Dogs communicate naturally through barking and vocalization. Dogs tend to bark if there is anything wrong, when they are hungry, alarmed and even excited. At the end of the day you will more than likely not be happy if your dog does not make a lot of noise if the house is being broken into.

There are some breeds of dogs that are prone to barking excessively therefore you need to be patient with them.  If you have one of these dogs then you will need to take some time to work with the dog in order to train it not to bark excessively.

Another very common reason for excessive barking is poor socialization. It is very important to allow your dog to meet a lot of different people from the early stages of its life. The most important time for socialization is when the puppy is between six and ten weeks of age.

There are many different ways in which you can give the dog mental stimulation in order to help to cure the problem of excessive barking. Some of the things that you can do are to train the dog to get the mail from the mailbox and bring it to you or train him to do some jobs around the house such as putting on lights.
