How to Stop a Shar Pei Biting

If you would like to stop your dog from biting then one of the best things that you can do is to train your dog. It is best to start training the dog when it is still a puppy. Puppies enjoy playing and interacting with people; however, they are also very impressionable. If you teach a puppy the wrong way to behave it will be very hard to correct the behavior. Therefore, it is very important to get it correct from the start. If puppies are trained from a young age they will not develop any bad behavior such as biting and chewing. It is very important that the correct behavior is constantly enforced.

It is always important to have toys available for the puppy to play with, and do not allow any games such as wrestling and tug of war that may result in a person getting bitten. If the puppy does bite, even if it is in play, immediately react with a high pitched ouch as this will startle the pup and it will know that the behavior was wrong. Even at a young age the puppy will recognize what is happening because when puppies are playing and get hurt they give a loud whelp. If you react in the same way the pup will understand that it has to stop biting.

It is very important to never punish a puppy physically as this will just provoke the puppy and lead to long term fear. If you create long term fear within the puppy it will take a lot of hard work to reverse the behavior.  It is very important to vocalize the point and then just ignore the puppy for a couple of minutes. This process will probably need to be repeated several times in order to reinforce that if the puppy bites people will not stay around and play. All puppies love attention therefore the lesson will be learned quickly. It is very important to avoid games that involve trying to take the toy out of the dog’s mouth as this will help to prevent any biting. It is also important that all members of the family are carrying out training methods in the same ways. One of the most important things when it comes to training is to be consistent.  It is important that children are taught how to handle the situation if the puppy bites them.

If the puppy continues to bite after you have tried these ideas there is another method that can be tried. This alternative method should only be used if you are certain that the puppy will not bite you too hard. If the puppy will not stop biting it is possible to discourage this behavior by loosely holding the jaw between the forefinger and the thumb; however, do not hold too tightly. This process should be done for about ten seconds. This process will teach the puppy that the biting is not a behavior that he should be doing. However, this may take a few attempts.
