How To Stop A Siberian Husky Barking

Dogs bark. That is just what they do, but when it becomes excessive it can be quite annoying and turn into a huge problem. When your Siberian husky starts to bark uncontrollably it is time to step in and solve the problem. The loud husky bark can become a nuisance and may lead to trouble with neighbors, so you want to get things under control as soon as possible.

You have probably noticed that a dog will bark at people, cars, other animals, the wind or really anything that moves or makes an unfamiliar noise. Sometimes barking is a good thing. You might not mind your dog warning you of a stranger on your property. You may laugh at your dog barking at the wind. Other times, though, it just gets out of hand and the barking becomes too much to handle.

Getting Control

Dogs communicate through barking, so you can’t stop the behavior all together. What you want to do is get it under control, so that your dog stops barking on command. This involves some training. It will take time and you must be consistent.

The first thing to do is to stop yelling. Yelling at your dog to be quiet does no good. Your dog will just think you are talking back to him. Yelling seems like barking to him, so he will bark back. You really are just encouraging the barking.

Another thing not to do is to comfort your dog. Do not “shhh” him or baby him. What this teaches your dog is that barking gets him attention and love. He will start barking more just to get your attention.

Instead Do This

You need to establish a command to stop the barking. You can say “quiet”, for example. When he starts to bark you give the command. If he stops barking give him a reward. If he keeps barking then keep giving the command until the barking stops.

You can also try another approach and that is teaching your dog to speak on command. By teaching your dog to speak you will then gain control over when he barks.

If your dog’s barking problem seems to be related to people then he made need some socialization. You should start taking him around other people and dogs to help him get more comfortable with people. He will not lose his instinct to determine a bad stranger from a good stranger, so don’t worry about that. Socialization will only help your dog to learn how to respond to strangers based upon your reactions. When he meets good stranger, people that you know, he will notice you act different than when you encounter a bad stranger, someone you don’t know. This will teach him when to bark at a stranger and when not to bark at a stranger.

Controlling your Siberian husky’s barking will take work. You will have to make time to train him and to work with him. He has to learn when barking is appropriate and when it is not. It can be a long process, but it is well worth it in the end.
