How To Stop A Siberian Husky Biting
When your Siberian husky is a puppy you will probably notice he likes to bite a lot. He bites when playing and to express himself. This is a natural behavior, but it has to be controlled. Your puppy will grow up and a full grown Siberian husky can do some damage when he bites. That is why you have to get it under control.
Puppies will bite each other as they play. This is a natural way they interact. When you bring your puppy home he will still think that biting is the right way to interact with you. This is a good time to start training him not to bite. He needs to learn that biting hurts you and that it is something he can’t do. As a puppy his teeth won’t do much damage, but as his adult teeth come in, biting will really start to hurt. Right now is the time to start training.
Ouch! That Hurts
The best way to show your pup that biting hurts is with a loud, vocal reaction. Simply pull away and loudly state “ouch” followed by a firm “no”. You have to startle your dog so you can get his attention. When he sees you are in pain he will pull back and start to realize that biting you hurts. Your dog loves you and considers you part of his family so he won’t like to hurt you. In time, this can help to stop his biting behavior.
Walk Away
Sometimes simply letting your dog know his biting hurts is not enough. Biting is not only a form of play, but it can also be a way to seek attention. After all, when you are playing he is getting your attention. He knows if he bites you will engage with him. If your dog bites you and then you pick him up or you try to use a toy to distract him and play with him, then he is learning that biting gets him attention.
To handle this type of biting, you want to react differently to his biting. Instead of reacting, just walk away. Get up and move if you have to. This is often the best method to teach children. Dog’s do not usually pay attention to children when they give commands because they are not very authoritative. So, teach children that they need to ignore the dog when he bites. They should get up and walk away or leave the room if the dog bites. Eventually, the dog will learn that biting chases people away and he will find other ways to interact with you.
Do Not Encourage Biting
You may not even realize that you are encouraging your dog to bite. Children are most likely to be guilty of this. When playing around a dog will often bite gently and if it doesn’t hurt you may ignore it and keep on allowing the behavior. This only confuses your dog. You can’t let him bite sometimes and other times tell him no. You must be consistent. If you do not want your dog to bite then you have to stop all biting, no matter if it hurts or not.
Biting is usually not too much of a problem with a pup since they are not able to bite very hard. As your Siberian husky grows, though, biting can become a huge problem. Dog bites can be quite harmful and that is why you need to stop your dog’s biting at an early age.
