How To Stop A Siberian Husky Jumping Up On People Or Furniture
No matter how wonderful it is to get a big doggy welcome home with a hug and sloppy husky kiss, it’s a bad idea to encourage the activity. Normally, dogs aren’t aware whether you want them to greet you that way every time they see you, whether strangers or others like doggy kisses and whether the small child they jump on can stay erect under their weight. They just know they love you and everyone else and it seemed okay to do this. If your adorable husky loves to jump up and greet new people, you have to get it under control.

Sometimes dogs jump up to greet people, other times its simply a ploy to get your attention or the attention of the visitor. There are other reasons dogs jump up on people, however. Dogs have scent glands located around the face area. When another dog approaches, your husky can identify that dog by the scent he gives from the glands. People are too tall to sniff without jumping, so they jump to take whiff of the scent. Another reason a dog might jump is simply to show you who’s boss. Standing erect and looking face to face shows you he thinks he’s the dominant dog of the house and your superior.
Dogs jump on furniture for different reasons. Your husky may think he has every right to sit next to you on the couch, unless you show him otherwise. Sometimes dogs sit on furniture because it’s far more comfortable than the floor. Husky hair becomes part of your wardrobe when this occurs.
Of course, knowing why they jump on people and stopping them is two different things. Using two important commands and teaching your dog to follow those helps eliminate most problems. The first command is sit. The minute your dog jumps up to greet you tell your husky to “sit” in an authoritarian manner. When, and if, the dog sits, reward him with an extra pet, treat or by kneeling down to his eye level and giving him a hug. If he comes up to you when you arrive home and doesn’t jump, reward that behavior the same way. Kneeling to the dogs level gives your dog a chance to sniff you properly and greet you without jumping. As he becomes accustomed to greeting you sitting, it transfers to all people.
Keeping the dog off the furniture involves the second command using the word “off.” Don’t let your doggie start sitting on furniture or the habit is harder to break and causes a great deal of confusion for you pup.
However, sometimes dogs simply decide that jumping on chairs and people is their goal and no matter how often you say off or sit, they continue. In this case you have to go to the next level of training. Talk doggy talk when you say “off.” Bare your teeth after you say off. Look your dog in the eye when you do the open-mouthed snarl and he’ll get the message that you mean business.
Sometimes, that doesn’t work either and you have to repeat the commands several times. Once the dog obeys, however, a little treat helps him remember his actions. If treats aren’t close at hand, praise works wonders too.
Helping your dog to understand the best way to interact with humans makes him more lovable and welcome to others. You owe it to your husky to teach him the proper way to meet and greet friends and family and you need to be consistent with your training.
