How To Stop A Silky Terrier Chewing

Training your Silky Terrier not to chew is more time consuming than it is hard. Dogs chew on things for many different reasons. It is important to know and understand these reasons before we can know the correct course of action to take. If you are not sure what the reasons for this chewing habit are, then spend some time investigating your dog and what they are doing when they start to chew on items in your home.

All puppies including your Silky Terrier have periods in their life that they spend teething, just like a child does. When this is going on, they chew on items to relieve pain. If this is the reason for your dog or puppies chewing habit, then place a cold rag or chew toy into the freezer. After a short period of time, take the item out of the freezer and give it to your dog. This will give him something that you do not mind if he chews on as well as give him something that will help his pain.

Dogs also chew on items such as shoes, furniture or just about anything they can get their teeth on. They may do this out of playfulness, boredom, fear, attention or separation anxiety. When your dog displays this type of behavior, he needs to know that this behavior is bad. Dogs do not think the way that humans do. For the dog this behavior is normal and they do not understand.

We also need to understand as humans it is our responsibility to do our part. If your Silky Terrier is chewing on items such as shoes, socks or other such items, then it may be partially our negligence. Make sure that you put these items where they should go and do not leave them where your dog can get to them. However, dogs are drawn to our scent and they will often look for items that contain these scents. In order to prevent your dog from chewing on your shoes and socks, take some of the dog toys including chew toys and throw them into the dryer for a day or two. This will allow our human scent to cover your dogs belongings and they will go for their belongings first. Provide your dog with an arsenal of dog toys to play with and chew on. It is easier to teach your pet what he can chew on rather than what he can not chew on.

For those items that can not be put away, such as furniture, you will want to deter the desire of the dogs chewing habit away from these items. One of the best ways to do this, is to use some type of taste deterrent spray on the furniture. Before applying this spray, find a spot that is inconspicuous to make sure that it will not damage the furniture in any way.

Make sure that your Silky Terrier gets plenty of exercise. This is not only healthy for your dog but will also take any attention or desire away from chewing.

Remember to be patient. These methods are not meant to be instant fixes to the problem. It may take some time for your dog to learn what he can and can not chew on. Do not punish your dog for this behavior. What is done is done.

The best thing to do is follow these steps. Punishing your dog for something that they have already done is something that they will not understand. Punishment can also be viewed as a threat to your dog and may result in even more undesirable behavior. Your Silky Terrier dog or puppy loves you and only wants to make you happy. Make sure that you return this love and devotion and your relationship will grow stronger.
