How To Stop A Tibetan Terrier Whining
Training your Tibetan Terrier to stop whining is a process that needs to be initiated in the early years of your dog’s life. If you wait until the dog is mature, then the process of training your dog to stop whining will prove to be much more difficult. Whining is another form of communication that dogs use to relay their feeling to their owners. These feelings may be one of pain, fear or just to let us know that they are upset. Though whining is a form of communication, it can become overwhelming if not taken under control.
If your Tibetan Terrier has never had a problem with whining before but has recently started the habit, then this could mean that something serious may be an underlying issue and you need to visit a veterinarian to perform a checkup on your dog. This is not the case with most dogs however. For the larger portion of dogs that whine, it is done to get the attention of the owner, to show feelings of abandonment or fear. This can become a huge problem for the owner. When your dog displays this type of behavior, do not punish your dog as this will only make the anxiety worsen and so will the whining.
If your dog is whining due to feelings of abandonment or separation, then you want to start training him in short periods of time to be alone. You will eventually lengthen the periods of time to be longer. You want to start doing this by getting your Tibetan Terrier comfortable in the area that they will be staying in while you are gone. Teaching your pet to be comfortable is very important in preventing your dog from whining. Once you have placed your pet in this new area, spend some time with him playing. Once you feel the dog is comfortable, leave the room for the designated period of time. The dog will more than likely start to whine, this is ok, it will take more than one attempt to accomplish the goal.
Once your dog as become comfortable being alone for the short period of time, lengthen the amount of time he will be alone. It is important for the dog to be comfortable the time that you will be away every day. When going through these processes, if they do not seem to be working, then it is ok to tell your dog NO in a firm voice. Let him know that you are the one in charge and that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Do not by any means be mean to the dog, but you need to assert you authority. It is also very important to reward your dog for the periods of time that he is quiet and not whining. Your dog needs to know that he is behaving the way that you want him to. By rewarding the dog, he will learn that when performing the correct behavior that it pleases you.
Dogs also whine as a way of getting your attention. He may want something from you, whether it is food, playtime or to be given some object. If your dog is displaying whining for any one of these reasons, then they need to learn that it is not appropriate and you will not stand for it. You can start by ignoring the behavior all together. Do not acknowledge the dog in any way when he is performing this behavior. If he stops whining, then you may reward him for stopping the undesired behavior. If ignoring your Tibetan Terrier is not working, then firmly tell your dog NO and let them know that they will not get what they want by acting this way. During the times when your dog performs desirably, reward your dog. Let them know that you like it when he displays the proper behavior.
By using these methods, you will train your Tibetan Terrier not to whine so much. These methods are not over night fixes, but with some love and dedication, you can train your dog to behave the way they should.
